Poem for July 1

The Lynchian

Dear wall with stains.
Dear make-up.
Dear highway.
Dear stage with red curtains.
Dear three-legged dog.
Dear industrial sound.

I am afraid of your sound.
I am afraid of your stains.
I am afraid of your dog.
I am afraid of your make-up.
I am afraid of your curtains.
I am afraid of your highway.

-Jake Kennedy, from Apollinaire’s Speech to the War Medic (Book Thug, 2011)
